One of the most famous temples in Bengaluru is theNandi Temple located in the Basavanagudi area of Bengaluru. This temple is dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull of the Hindu God Lord Shiva. Hence, it is also referred to as the "Bull Temple".

Architectural Grandeur of the Nandi Temple Bangalore


The Nandi Bull Temple was built by Kempe Gowda in the 16th Century in the style of Dravidian architecture. The exquisitely crafted small temple was created from a large rock of granite. The tower of the temple was built years later, in the 20th Century. This tower has beautiful figurines of Saivite saints as well as varied motifs.

The sacred bull of Lord Shiva, Nandi, is what attracts thousands of devotees. This huge monolith is considered to be one of the largest Nandi idols in the world, with a height of 15 ftx20 feet. Thanks to the constant application of oil to the monolith, the gray colour of the seated bull has changed to dark shades. It is believed that the the river Vishwa Bharati originated from the feet of this Nandi monolith.

Within the temple, there is another temple dedicated to the Hindu God Lord Ganesha. There are also sculptures of the Hindu Sun God Surya, and of the Moon Goddess Chandra seated on on their horse-drawn chariots. There is a small Lingam shrine too.

1. You can take your own vehicle to the Nandi Temple, Bangalore after getting directions from locals to Basavanagudi.

2. You can board a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus heading towards Basavanagudi where the Nandi Temple is located.

3. You can hire a taxi or rent a private car to go to Nandi Temple, Bangalore.

Important information for Visitors to the Nandi Temple Bangalore


1. There are no entry fees to the Nandi temple.

2. Please remove your footwear outside the Nandi temple.

3. Please wear appropriate clothes when visiting the Nandi temple.

4. Before taking any photographs, find out if photography is permitted inside the Nandi temple.

5. It is possible that non-Hindus may not be allowed to enter the Nandi temple -please confirm this before visiting.
